UFC fighter Colby Covington recently appeared on SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio podcast. The Welterweight division fighter would discuss a number of pro wrestling related topics on the show, including the relationship between pro wrestling and mixed martial arts.
“It’s a really good relationship and it’s something that is there for the guys to use” Covington began. “But you know the guys in MMA? They don’t use it. They don’t use the psychology that is in WWE and pro wrestling.”
Covington would elaborate, saying how MMA fighters in general can use their talking game to elevate their careers. “If they used it? Not only would they would better their careers and get people more interested in them? More entertaining by them? But I think people are afraid to go out of the box and that’s why I was never afraid. I didn’t care what people thought of me and I wanted to go out of the box. I didn’t want to be like everybody else, I wanted to stand out and I wanted to be something different.”
Colby would also discuss his time with IMPACT Wrestling, where he learnt the style of entertainment with now WWE Superstar Bobby Lashley. “So that’s why I decided to go down this angle that, you know, this pro wrestling type of psychology. Building fights and selling fights. I first learned that when I did my stint at IMPACT Wrestling with Bobby Lashley. Just to see how those guys worked and you know the the entertainment side of it that made me want to bring that back over into MMA.
Covington would finish by saying that more MMA fighters need to bring the entertainment aspect over to the sport to make the most amount of money possible. “It’s just 50% MMA and 50% Pro Wrestling. People need to use that to their advantage if they want to make the most money possible.”
Covington has recently stated that he wants to make the move to WWE in 2021. With a plethora of ‘shoot’ fighters making their way to the company and some being hugely successful this could be another opportunity for WWE to leverage an MMA fighter’s star power. Conversely, he could end up being the next Cain Velasquez.
